Investigator-initiated research remains a vital
part of the Canadian health research enterprise. At the same time, the
world of health research and its funding context are evolving. Recent
trends around the world show a move towards increasingly
multidisciplinary and transformative research. In its second strategic
plan, Health Research Roadmap: Creating innovative research for better health and health care,
CIHR recognized that changes were needed to enhance the way it funds
investigator-initiated health research and knowledge translation to
fulfill both the broad spectrum of CIHR’s mandate and sustain the
Canadian health research enterprise. To address these changes, CIHR has
embarked on a process to reform the Open Suite of Programs and Peer
Review process.
Engagement process
Since the release of our second strategic plan, CIHR has continued to
solicit, receive, analyze, and act upon a steady stream of feedback
from the research community about the health and functioning of CIHR
programs. We will continue to engage with the research community on our
reforms over the coming months, through a series of group discussions
and other fora. We see the community’s response to our proposal as
critical to the finalization of the reforms and it is our intention to
give every viewpoint a full chance to be heard and considered. CIHR is
continuing to refine the design and is targeting to announce the changes
in the Spring of 2012.
