VIHA Aboriginal Health Council Members Sign Memorandum of Friendship and Mutual Respect
The goal of members of VIHA’s Aboriginal Health Council (AHC) is to improve the health conditions of all Aboriginal people. In January, members of the AHC signed a Memorandum of Friendship and Mutual Respect to signify their commitment to work in partnership, honesty and transparency to achieve this goal. The Memorandum was signed at a ceremony held at the Nanoose First Nation Elder Centre.
As members took their turns signing the official document, many spoke about their sincere pledge to uphold the commitments and intent of the Memorandum of Friendship and Mutual Respect. Nanoose First Nation Chief David Bob, who is also Co-Chair of the Inter Tribal Health Authority and Chair of the Q’opthut Sul’hween Society (Gathering of Elders), said he believes that this partnership will go a long way in helping Aboriginal people get access to health services that meet their unique cultural and geographic needs.
The work of the AHC is conducted within a respectful and positive environment and guided by mutually agreed upon principles and values. All members are committed to promoting collaboration, seeking consensus and working in a manner that is inclusive to all Aboriginal communities and their residents, including status, non-status, on and off reserve and Métis people.
