Floss before that Valentine's Kiss!
February 14th, 2012
Health Canada, the American Dental Association and many other groups are pointing to a link between systemic diseases and gum disease:Diabetes: "... people with diabetes have a higher risk of developing periodontal disease and periodontal disease can make it more difficult to manage your blood glucose control." International Diabetes Federation
Heart Disease: "... people with periodontal disease are almost twice as likely to suffer from coronary artery disease as those without periodontal disease. " American Association of Periodontology
Stroke: "People who had higher blood levels of certain disease-causing bacteria in the mouth were more likely to have atherosclerosis in the carotid artery in the neck. Clogging of the carotid arteries can lead to stroke." Devarieux et al. (2005). Circulation, 111, 576-582.
